OUR VISION IS COMMITMENT TO COURTESY AND EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE DELIVERY The department of Human Nutrition is a department within the faculty of health sciences. It aims to prepare nutrition and dietetic professionals capable of providing services at clinical and community settings to help solve health and nutrition problems. ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES The bachelors program is open to form four leavers who meet the eligibility criteria as set out by the university, and also open to diploma holders from recognized institutions wishing to upgrade to degree level. The Bachelors program comprises courses in food production, management and service, clinical dietetics and diet therapy, and community nutrition with general university common core subjects in agriculture, environment, statistics and basic sciences. This program is unique in that besides food and nutrition training, the graduates acquire a background in agricultural sciences which gives them an added advantage when it comes to solving food insecurity and livelihood problems within a developing country settings in Sub-Saharan Africa that are agriculture based with a big rural population. The Masters course comprises two semesters of course work and a research thesis. The coursework is made up of elective options in food management courses, human nutrition and dietetics and common core courses in computers, biometrics and biochemistry. The PhD program is by research thesis in the area of foods, nutrition and dietetics. The department has a well equipped food laboratory and cooperates closely with other departments within the university such as animal science, dairy and food technology, chemistry, zoology, biochemistry and business management. The university medical department, Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital surrounding farming communities provide the practical setting for learning and outreach in dietary counseling and food security studies. While the University Agriculture Resource Centre (ARC), offer good facilities for learning quantity food delivery and management. Professional openings for our graduates include; the government ministries of Health, special programs, agriculture, Non-Governmental organizations, hospitals and hospices, food service industry, and research institutions.
